With the adoption of the UN Environment Assembly Resolution on environmental education (UNEA2/3), the Global Action Programme on Education for Sustainable Development (UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/69211), and Sustainable Development Goal Target 4.7, on education for sustainable development we have entered an era in which universities must step up as agents of transformative change.

It is important that universities start positioning themselves strategically and respond to expectations in leading and contributing to the shift towards a sustainable future, with focus on the current and next generation of leadership – students. We must mobilize our capacity for research and innovation, green our campuses, introduce our students to sustainable lifestyles and engage with our local communities for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN Environment Global Universities Partnership on Environment and Sustainability (GUPES), with the involvement of universities across the world, provides a strategic and inclusive platform to share sustainability solutions and promote education for sustainable development. Bringing together administrators, faculty and students, the flagship initiative links universities to each other and to the broader community working towards a more sustainable future for us all.

On behalf of GUPES Steering Committee, we would like to express our sincere thanks to the joint efforts and inclusive sharing of all the members and partners across the world.
